On Wu-Tang Clan’s seminal 1997 posse cut “Triumph,” U-God kicks off his verse with the following bars:
“Olympic torch flaming, we burn so sweet/The thrill of victory, the agony, defeat.”
Those last seven words, which were originally spoken by ABC’s Jim McKay in the Wide World of Sports intro, are the perfect way to describe not only sports, but being a sneakerhead as well.
We all yearn to catch a W on Saturday mornings or in raffles or surprise weekday restocks, and the feeling is sweet indeed. The same goes when we strike out (and we’ve all taken an L on a pair we really wanted at some point or another).
