A lesson most of us learn early in life is “never judge a book by its cover.”
While it might not always be the perfect expression, what our relatives or teachers or coaches were trying to teach us was that what you see isn’t necessarily what you get, and appearances can be deceiving.

Upon opening the box (or just seeing photos on Instagram), you might be forgiven for thinking this is a pretty unassuming low-cut Air Jordan 5 Retro model. Sail uppers, Chile Red and yellow highlights. Nothing that jumps right out at you.
But take a closer look. The leather upper that we’re used to seeing? Gone. This shoe has canvas uppers, and there appears to be something underneath them…
That’s right. The canvas upper is designed to wear away to reveal graphics below that represent Chinese firecracker packaging.
The Air Jordan 5 Retro Low ‘CNY’ is part of Jumpman’s 2021 collection celebrating China’s Lunar New Year festivities. That collection is divided into three design themes, one of which is “the explosive firecracker.”
