Trending Transitional Outerwear for Fall Weather

Transitional outerwear is a fall must-have. As the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler, incorporating a layer or two is a great way to keep yourself comfortable while also staying on trend. Here are some tips on how to seamlessly incorporate transitional outerwear for fall into your seasonal wardrobe.

How to Layer for Style and Warmth

Layering typically consists of three layers. The first is a base layer next to your skin that consists of a t-shirt or tank top. If you plan on being active, such as going for a run or hike, you’ll want to check what material your shirt is made out of. For outdoor activities where you’ll be sweating, make sure this layer is a synthetic fiber like polyester since those fabrics dry faster. If you’re layering for work or school, then you can wear any fabric.

The second layer is a sweater or something for warmth. This typically has longer sleeves and may or may not have some insulation. Exactly what this layer is can vary depending on where you live. Sometimes it’s as light as a windbreaker, and other times it’s a hoodie or sweatshirt. Depending on what you choose, this may also be able to double as a coat.

The last layer is your outerwear. Typically, this is a light to medium-weight coat that is designed to keep you warm. This is essential for when it gets cooler but can be removed if necessary.

Trending Transitional Outerwear

When preparing for cooler temperatures, here are some transitional fall outerwear options that you won’t want to miss.

Lightweight Fleece

For a day that’s not exactly cold enough for a jacket, fleece is the perfect layering option. It can be worn over your base layer and will keep you snug and warm. For fleece jackets, we love Nike Tech Fleece for its gorgeous style and functional details. Our go-to pick is the Windrunner Full-Zip Hoodie for its front kangaroo pocket and internal stash pocket designed to keep your phone secure. For men, we recommend a Sonneti London Hoodie.

Matching Sets

Many brands today have updated their casual sets into stylish joggers, sweatshirts, and fleeces that are perfect for layering. For a cozy, laidback look, we love Nike Club Fleece, particularly the timeless style of the Club Fleece Hoodie and Mid-Rise Joggers. These two pieces are perfect together but can also be mixed and matched with other articles of clothing in your fall wardrobe to create an endless number of looks depending on your style. For men, we love the Tech Fleece Full-Zip Hoodie and matching joggers for their intricate color-blocking and lightweight athletic profiles.

Transitional Coats for Fall Weather

This adidas Puffer Jacket is an excellent choice for a slim-fitting coat that can keep you warm this fall and into the winter. If you want something that can perform in even colder temperatures, then consider a Nuptse Jacket from The North Face. For men, we love the Outdoor Archive Jacket from Timberland, which is made with 100% recycled down insulation, or the Nike Air Max Woven Jacket for extra warmth in a lightweight profile.
