Community Voices is our commitment to fund and amplify underrepresented voices. By elevating their messages we educate ourselves, our communities & stand together to create a positive change. Every month we have discussions relevant to various change makers and donate to support change in communities they represent or support. This coming Monday June 19th marks an important day of observance, Juneteenth.
Juneteenth is observed to commemorate the end of slavery in the country. It’s celebrated annually on June 19th, the anniversary of the day in 1865 when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that the Civil War had ended and that all enslaved people were free. Momentus in the fact that the enslaved were unaware they were actual free on January 1, 1863. A southern rebellion kept the word from spreading creating conflicts with Union troops that were sent out to spread the word. This day has lead to a long celebrated cultural holiday in african-american communities.
To learn more and gain some perspective into the day, we’re excited to chat with special guest & music artist Rapsody.
